HELLER'S KITCHEN - 15 Salisbury Place, Southside - Tucked away in a quiet street off Newington Road, this newcomer to the Edinburgh dining scene is gaining a reputation as the lazy lunch destination of choice among the city's southsiders. Also very atmospheric in the evening, we are looking forward to our first visit to this restaurant. (£35.50) map
CAFE ANDALUZ - 77 George Street, New Town - Opened in 2008, this is a sister restaurant of two excellent Spanish tapas restaurants which are well established in Glasgow. They have certainly hit on the right formula for success with Morrocan inspired decor, authentic Spanish cuisine and fast and friendly service. (£33) map
IGLU - 2B Jamaica Street, New Town - Top quality ingredients and no-pretence cooking with a flash of panache are the core values at this highly impressive yet unassuming bistro tucked down Jamaica Street. Situated upstairs from the bar the restaurant is small but homely and is the perfect place to unwind at the weekend. (£33) map
A ROOM IN THE TOWN - 18 Howe Street, New Town - This chic and atmospheric candle-lit bistro is an old favourite of the Supper Club. You can be sure of excellent service at this well run Scottish restaurant. It has an imaginative menu and the desserts are to die for! (£39.50) map
CAFE MARLAYNE - Old Fishmarket Close, Royal Mile - Over the last 9 years Cafe Marlayne has successfully provided reassuringly good but homely French cooking in an unpretentious ambience. March 2005 saw a second branch opening in the Old Town, settling into the low cellars, narrow bar and outdoor terrace at 7 Old Fishmarket Close, formerly Le Sept. This restaurant offers good value and skilled cooking with daily menu changes. (£34) map
ENGLISHMAN, SCOTSMAN AND AN IRISHMAN - 46 Queen Charlotte, Leith, Edinburgh - This restaurant has a quirky name and an equally quirky venue. Housed in a former fire station, the white brickwork and splashes of art work create a bright, spacious dining area that's as welcoming as the enthusiastic English, Scots and Irish owners and staff. The food not surprisingly takes its inspiration from the ethnicity of its owners. (£33) map
